Care abroad

Care abroad involves both emergency care and planned care. You will find information on both types of care below.

Before departure

Before traveling abroad, please note the following

  • Make sure you have the appropriate insurance documents with you

  • You need an insurance statement in order to apply for a visa to Russia and Cuba

  • When you have made costs and paid them yourself, please ask for an invoice in Dutch, English, French or German. We are unable to process invoices in other languages.

I am abroad and need care now

Please call the alarm line at (071) 5 825 444 when you need care urgently. The ANWB will help you get (the assurance of coverage for) the care you need. The alarm line also arranges permission for:

  • The shipping of medication

  • Repatriation of bodily remains

  • Medical accompaniment during repatriation

Contacting the alarm line is required in order to access coverage out of the supplementary insurance for the following types of care:

  • Admission to hospital

  • More than two outpatient treatments

  • Medical repatriation (to evaluate the necessity)

Plannable care

In some circumstances, permission can be granted for intramural care (admission for at least one night) abroad:

  • When the care cannot be given in the Netherlands (or country of residency) in a timely manner;

  • When you need specialist care that is not available in the Netherlands.

If you have questions about treatment abroad, you can contact our claims department at (071) 5 825 437

Taking medication abroad

If you use medication and go abroad for more than three months, you can take up to six months’ worth of medication with you. In order to qualify, you need to stay abroad long-term and have a chronic need of this medication.

Some countries require an official statement for medication contained in the Opium law, such as sleep medication, sedatives, strong pain medication and ADHD-medication. If you want to check whether your medication falls within the confines of the Opium law, please contact your doctor or pharmacy.
