Your insurance card abroad

Need emergency care abroad? Your foreign care provider will want to know if you’re insured before treating you. You can show them your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The EHIC is located on the back of your Zorg en Zekerheid insurance card. With the EHIC, you are entitled to coverage of care in any European country to the extent that insured citizens of that country are.

Call the ANWB alarm line in the case of urgent care

Always call the ANWB alarm line at 071 5 825 444 if you urgently need care abroad.

The ANWB will advise you and, if necessary, will guarantee the payment of the costs to the care provider. The ANWB can make sure the foreign care provider is paid.

Your EHIC is valid in the following countries

If the country you’re travelling to is not on the list, you do not need to show your insurance card.

    Australia Hungary Portugal
    Austria Iceland Romania
    Belgium Ireland Slovakia
    Bulgaria Italy Slovenia
    Croatia Latvia Spain**
Cyprus (Greek part) Liechtenstein Czech Republic
    Denmark Lithuania Sweden
    Estonia Luxembourg Switzerland
    Finland Malta United Kingdom***
    France* The Netherlands
    Germany Norway
    Greece Poland

    * France, including Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Reunion, St Pierre and Miquelon
** Spain, including Ceuta and Melilla
    *** United Kingdom, including Gibraltar

In some countries, care providers require an insurance statement in the language of the country itself. These statements, so called 111 forms, will be sent to you if you require care while in such a country. You can call the ANWB alarm line to request them.

Requesting a 111 form before travelling abroad

You do not need a 111 form if you are going abroad.  However, it is possible to get one beforehand when you’re  travelling to any of the countries listed below, please contact us directly: Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Tunisia.

If you’re travelling to Turkey and wish to take a 111 form with you, you can request one through your MijnZZ-page.

Tip! Need an insurance card? Contact us! You’ll receive your new card within two weeks.

How will the foreign care provider be paid?

    • If you show your insurance card, you do not have to pay anything beforehand and claim those costs afterwards.
    • In some cases, you first need to pay the money yourself. You can claim the invoices afterwards using the claim form geneeskundige kosten buitenland (Dutch).

    Russia and Cuba

Russia and Cuba require an insurance statement in order to grant a visa. You can contact us to request this statement. If you need this statement quickly, it might be best to visit one of our insurance shops.
