Zorgverzekeraar Zorg en Zekerheid

I come from abroad and I'm going to study in the Netherlands

Please read the paragraph that applies to you:

  • You are only in the Netherlands for study purposes
  • You are a student from Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius, Aruba, Curaçao or St. Maarten
  • You are going to study and work
  • You are going to study and do an internship

You are only in the Netherlands for study purposes

If you are temporarily studying and living in the Netherlands and do not have a side job or an internship, you are not entitled to Dutch health insurance. You can use health insurance from your home country or private (internationally operating) health insurance.

Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius, Aruba, Curaçao or St. Maarten

Are you a student from Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius, Aruba, Curaçao or St. Maarten, then you may be eligible for health insurance. The Sociale verzekeringsbank (SVB) assesses whether you are entitled to take out Dutch health insurance.

  • If you are entitled to health insurance, you will receive a Wlz statement. Register with Zorg en Zekerheid. Send an e-mail with the Wlz statement as an attachment.
  • If you are not entitled to health insurance in the Netherlands, you can take out health insurance in your home country or private (internationally operating) health insurance.

You can contact the SVB.

Studying and a job

If you start working alongside your studies, you are obliged to take out Dutch health insurance. Register with Zorg en Zekerheid. Send an e-mail with the signed employment contract (including the date of commencement of employment) or a pay slip (including the date of commencement of employment) as an attachment.

Studying and doing an internship

If you also do an internship during your studies, we cannot indicate in advance whether you need to be insured in the Netherlands.

The Sociale verzekeringsbank (SVB) assesses whether you are obliged to take out Dutch health insurance. This depends on the amount of your wage and expense allowance.

EHIC

If you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you can show it in the Netherlands if you need emergency care. Your insurer in your home country will then be contacted to arrange reimbursement of the healthcare costs incurred.
